When present and former clients of Janice Leiper speak of her, words like commitment, compassion, diverse skill set, safety, sensitivity and confidentiality are heard time and time again. It comes as no surprise to those who know her, her background and her life experience.
A native of Pittsburgh, Janice earned her degree in Law Enforcement and Corrections at Penn State, whereupon she immediately took a position with the Board of Probation and Parole at Muncy Prison. After two years she advanced to become Associate Director of the Female Offenders program of Western Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh while pursuing and obtaining a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Pittsburgh. While working in the penal system, where the facts are often elusive, Janice further honed her intuitive and perceptive skills first learned in the urban environs of her upbringing.
Armed with her MSW she then took a position with the Regional Alcohol Program of South Hills Health System, followed by employment as a counselor in the Employee Assistance Program at Weirton Steel Corporation, an early pioneer in corporate EAP programs. The combination of addictions counseling and the need for fast, accurate diagnosis and referral of distressed employees in a corporate environment proved a potent addition to her growing capabilities.
Marriage and two subsequent relocations resulted in a brief position with an EAP consulting company in Philadelphia and culminated with a position as National Director of the new Health Advisory Program at American International Group at their headquarters in Manhattan, reporting to the Medical Director. After three years of the frenzy of Wall Street Janice opted for a more sylvan lifestyle and decided to begin what has become a private psychotherapy practice of over twenty years in Stamford, CT, with special expertise in marital and couples relationship therapy.
All through these years and up to the present Janice has continued to refine and broaden her skills, not only through the weight of experience gained from dealing with innumerable people in difficulty but through continuing education, experimentation and accreditation with advanced therapeutic techniques such as Imago Relationship Therapy, EMDR and others. It is her diverse, lifetime experience providing fast, accurate assessment of circumstances followed by results oriented intervention and treatment in concert with her trademark down-to-earth style that earns her the accolades that come far and wide from clients and colleagues alike.
